BMW's 7th gen midsize luxury sedan is back and looking prettier than ever, not to mention sportier than ever.

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is a handsome machine with a ton of kick under the hood and all the usual luxury touches in the cabin. Its underpinnings have borrowed from the more sport-focused 3 Series, while the luxury and tech portions of its makeup took most of its cues from the 7 Series luxury cruiser. This amalgam of sport and luxury in a mid- to full-size sedan makes the 2017 5 Series one of the best must-sees currently on the road for anyone in the market for a new luxury sedan.

An Agile Sprinter in a Tuxedo

The first thing BMW did was lighten the load of the 2017 5 Series by a nice margin. They accomplished this using weight-saving materials throughout, such as an aluminum trunklid, roof, and doors which brought the car's weight down to about 137 pounds.

In the looks department, the 5 Series is more svelte than ever, more akin to its 3 Series than its 7 Series brethren. The headlights are now adaptive LEDs and stretch to touch the BMW twin-kidney grille, and behind these are aerodynamics-enhancing automatic shutters. In the back, larger taillights containing LED elements wrap farther around onto the fenders. The always available M Sport package can be purchased to emphasize the sport of the 5, including a revised front fascia with larger air intakes, restyled rocker panels, and trapezoidal exhaust outlets that poke out from a lower rear fascia styled to suggest a diffuser. Inside, the M package installs aluminum pedals, an M Sport steering wheel, and optional black leather with blue contrast stitching.

The regular interior provides typical BMW luxury enhancements. Advanced tech features include gesture control, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a digital instrument cluster. Even cooler, BMW decided to blend analog and digital functions along the instrument panel, creating a visual effect none of its competitors can match.

They've also included a restyled head-up display in the new 2017 5 Series. It's now 75% larger, with a full color display, and features turn-by-turn navigation, speed limits noted in the bottom corner, and current speed and gear display.

Under the hood, BMW opted for a pair of turbocharged engines for the 2017 5 Series. A 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder making 248-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque will be in the 530i, and the larger 540i gets the impressive 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 that delivers 335-hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Both powertrains get an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. And BMW purists will be happy to note the option to upgrade to BMW's superb AWD system, xDrive, is available in either configuration.
